What to Ask at the Gun Store: A New Buyer’s Guide

Walking into a gun store for the first time can feel overwhelming. The walls are lined with handguns, rifles, accessories, and unfamiliar terminology. But don’t worry — you don’t have to be an expert. You just need to know what questions to ask.

This guide will help you walk in with confidence and walk out with the right firearm (or at least the right plan).

1. “What’s the best option for my intended use?”

Start with your purpose. Whether it's home defense, concealed carry, hunting, or target shooting, the store associate should be able to guide you toward the right category of firearms.

Examples:

  • “I’m looking for something for home protection.”
  • “I’d like something easy to conceal.”
  • “I want a rifle for learning and plinking at the range.”

2. “Can I try the grip?”

Ergonomics matter. If the gun feels awkward or uncomfortable in your hand, you probably won’t enjoy shooting it — and that affects both your experience and safety.

Ask to:

  • Hold the gun unloaded
  • Feel the weight and balance
  • Try reaching the controls (mag release, safety, slide, etc.)

3. “What kind of ammunition does this use, and how much does it cost?”

A gun is only as useful as its ammo — and some calibers are much more affordable and available than others.

Follow-up questions:

  • Is this caliber easy to find?
  • What does a box of practice ammo cost?
  • Are there recoil differences with this caliber?

4. “How do I maintain this firearm?”

Every gun needs basic cleaning and upkeep. Some models are known for easy maintenance, while others are more complex.

Ask:

  • How often should I clean it?
  • What cleaning supplies will I need?
  • Is there a manual or tutorial for disassembly?

5. “Do you offer safety classes or training resources?”

Many stores partner with instructors or offer their own beginner classes — and it’s one of the smartest investments you can make.

You might ask:

  • Do you offer concealed carry permit classes?
  • Is there a basic firearm safety course you recommend?
  • Can someone walk me through how this gun operates?

6. “Can I return or exchange it?”

Some states allow returns under very specific circumstances. Others do not allow returns on firearms at all.

Important to know:

  • Is the sale final?
  • Do you have a buyback or trade-in program?
  • What if something’s defective?

7. “What accessories do I need to start out?”

You don’t need everything on the wall — but there are some must-haves for any new gun owner.

Ask about:

  • A safe or lock box (safety first)
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Cleaning kit
  • Holster or case
  • Extra magazines or speed loaders

8. “What are the local laws for ownership and carry?”

Your gun store associate should be familiar with local and state laws, and can help point you in the right direction.

Ask:

  • What paperwork or background checks are required?
  • What’s the wait time (if any)?
  • What are the rules for transporting a firearm in my state?

Final Tip: Be Honest About Your Experience

There’s no shame in being a beginner. In fact, most experienced shooters appreciate new gun owners who want to learn the right way. Don’t hesitate to say:

  • “I’ve never owned a gun before.”
  • “I’m nervous and want something manageable.”
  • “I’m not sure what I’m looking for — can you walk me through it?”

Summary

The gun store isn’t just a place to buy — it’s a place to learn. Asking the right questions not only helps you find the right firearm, but also builds your confidence and sets you on a safe, responsible path to gun
